Scope

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the National Telecommunication Institute (NTI), Egypt, will host the ITU Forum on 5G and Beyond: Enabling Smart and Sustainable Cities and Communities during 10-11 December, 2024. This in-person event, graciously hosted by NTI.

As the world embraces 5G and emerging mobile technologies, cities are increasingly leveraging these advancements to transform into smart, sustainable urban environments. 5G networks, with their ultra-fast speeds, low latency, and massive connectivity, are revolutionizing how people interact with city services, enabling more efficient, secure, and citizen-centric urban living.

This forum will bring together global leaders and experts to discuss the pivotal role of 5G and beyond in driving the development of smart cities and communities. The focus will be on how these technologies can reshape urban planning, enhance sustainability, and improve the quality of life for all residents.

The forum aims to stimulate a dialogue on the integration of 5G and advanced mobile networks into smart city planning, providing a platform to:

  1. Explore the potential of 5G and beyond: Discuss the capabilities of 5G networks in creating sustainable and resilient smart cities, focusing on infrastructure, data management, and connectivity.
  2. Enhance urban services and operations: Examine how 5G enables real-time data processing, smart grids, intelligent transportation systems, and other urban services critical to the functioning of smart cities.
  3. Foster interoperability and inclusivity: Promote the development of open standards for 5G networks to ensure seamless integration across different urban systems and services, fostering inclusivity and accessibility for all citizens.
  4. Showcase global case studies: Share successful examples of 5G-enabled smart city initiatives from around the world, highlighting best practices and lessons learned.
  5. Address security and governance challenges: Discuss the importance of secure 5G networks in smart cities, focusing on governance, cybersecurity, and compliance with emerging regulatory requirements.

This forum is open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, Academic Institutions, and a broad range of stakeholders including ICT policymakers, urban planners, city officials, technology providers, researchers, and academia. Participation is free of charge.

The National Telecommunication Institute (NTI), established in 1983, excels in Egypt's education, research, and technical consultation. Aligned with the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology (MCIT), NTI recognizes ICT's crucial role in the Egyptian societal advancement. It plays a key role in Egypt's Vision 2030 for digital transformation, supported by the government and industry collaboration. NTI prioritizes high-quality education, training, and innovative research, offering consultancy and technical services.

The Smart Village campus encompasses several state-of-art of telecommunications facilities. The campus includes one of the most important fiber optic centers (FOC) in the region. NTI Smart Village campus includes an outstanding integrated robotics laboratory to serve the robotics applications, particularly in the automotive sector, in addition to a fully equipped remote access network labs that allowing students and researchers to remotely access the resources.
